Wulingyuan National Park

In Hunan Province Quartzite sandstone pillars seem to defy gravity. The vegetation is sub-tropical but in winter on the days when rime forms and coats everything with ice it is particularly other-worldly. I was so lucky to see it.
To get my bearings this trip was with a small tour group which entered the park by the Wulingyuan Gate. We were told to bring grippers for our shoes and snow weather gear. We took buses, winding through gorges at the base and then the Bailong Elevator ( the tallest one in the world) to whisk us to the top. 1000 feet in 1 min 32 secs makes your ears pop! Then we walked along pathways skirting enormous drops and slithered down steep steps to galleries cut into the rock. Pictures do not do it justice .
