World Radio Day 2024

After yesterday’s Darwin Day today is UNESCO World Radio Day!

I am an avid and eclectic radio listener day and night! BBC tops the list with R5 Live, Radio 4 and Radio Scotland starting my news gathering day from 0500 to 0900 when we switch to Radio 3 and later to BBC Radio Gloucestershire. I used to listen to Classic FM but am not keen on the adverts and since they turned off DAB I have stopped listening. Radio 2 was an early afternoon indulgence with Steve Wright but I have now defected to Boom Radio.

I have a TuneIn Radio app and dip into Polish and Middle Eastern stations. And keep an ear open for topical podcasts. The excellent ones shine through the dross of ‘yet another self indulgent pod’.

When ‘the balloon goes up’ clockwork radios and analogue transmissions have a better chance of surviving.

I can multi task while listening to the radio. Something the more narcissistic TV Channels do not allow!

There was even a radio playing in the dentist’s operating room today. I just about survived nearly two hours of root canal removal! Three more appointments to go!

PS Steve Wright, unique radio broadcaster’s death was announced at 17h on World Radio Day and came as complete shock. He’s been a part of my radio listening for decades.

RIP Steve Wright
