The Man Comes Around
I woke up to horrible news today. My absolute favorite English teacher died recently. I always sort of hated English class. Mr. Wiebe actually made it interesting though. I know that's such a vague thing to say. It's how *some* of my pupils describe my class. It barely describes what he actually did, but it reminds us of how we felt about our favorite teachers. I'm pretty sure it was British Literature he taught. We read some of the classics, but he knew we would sleep through the year if that's all that we did. I remember reading the screenplay to two of Christopher Nolan's films (Memento and Following). It blew my mind! He also let us use the class to express ourselves and be creative. I remember doing my first cut up poem and reciting it to the class a week later. I wasn't even nervous. I can even see him saying, "I like that", in his low pack-a-day growl of a voice followed by a rare smile. It took so little for him to give me that recognition, but I was so proud of myself. He was truly a fantastic teacher.
The picture is totally unrelated as you can probably guess. Just a lady I saw while walking around town. The title, however, is one of the last songs written by Mr. Wiebe's favorite musician Johnny Cash.
