Applications...

Yesterday I advertised on my blog for some new assistants and second shooters, because my good friend and current assistant Colin is probably going to be too busy and too successful to work for me next year (sad times).

Colin and I sat down at a recent wedding a made a list of all of the qualities that I'm looking for in my perfect man, and decided that, unfortunately, he probably doesn't exist. He had a good laugh when he saw the job advert, because apparently my second shooter requirements are even more demanding!

I've been overwhelmed with the emails and messages that have come in over the past 24 hours, but not really surprised because I remember how hard it was to find second shooting work when I was starting out. I was ignored by most people, including some photographers who are now friends, and politely brushed off by others. I was very lucky that in the pub one evening a friend mentioned in passing that a top local photographer was looking for an assistant, and I applied straight away. Dozens of other people also got in touch, and I was lucky enough to be chosen. I shot over 30 weddings with Janine that season, at great venues and in all weather conditions - I learned so much, it really accelerated my career and I'll always be grateful for the opportunity.

I remember how nervous I was writing my application email, and I see so much of myself in the emails of the people who have applied so far. They are all so lovely, excited and hopeful, and I know it's going to kill me to have to turn people away! I'll just be thinking about how desperate and nervous I was waiting for her response (which incidentally took weeks and weeks because she couldn't bring herself to turn people down either!).

I'm going to spend the evening with a couple of cold drinks, some good music and my laptop, looking at the applications in a bit more detail - in a few days I'll start meeting some of them in person, I can tell already that it's going to be a tough decision but I have a feeling I'll find someone great!





In other news, I just made enough risotto to feed a small army, so if anyone is hungry feel free to call round :)
