Albert Dock

An excellent day covering a fair bit of ground. I’ve visited quite a number of European cathedrals over the last couple of years and I think the Liverpool Anglican one is the most impressive, the fifth largest in the world. In the Museum of Liverpool there was an interesting display about the hugely ambitious plans to build an even larger Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Lutyen’s design was abandoned and was replaced with something less costly. I should probably go and see it tomorrow if there’s time.

I spent the afternoon exploring the Royal Albert Dock and its various museums and galleries. The Tate Liverpool is closed for refurbishment which I hadn’t realised. It’s relocated in a much reduced state to the Open Eye Gallery where one of the exhibitions happened to be about Grow to Eat, a partnership project between the RHS and the Cranhill Development Trust in Glasgow. Gave me a few allotment ideas.

I also discovered the wonderful News From Nowhere Radical and Community Bookshop. I loved the Bolshie Bargain Bookstall.

I have underestimated the time required to do this city justice. I will be back but I’ll probably wait until the Tate reopens in 2025.
