Wild west coast

Yesterday was wild, windy and squally.  We went north up the coast marvelling at the beaches until we reached 'Punakaiki' or the English name  'Pancake rocks'.  These are lime stone outcrops battered by the sea until they formed layers which do indeed look like pancakes.  Wave action  has  hollowed out spaces at sea height to make fantastic  blowholes.   The sea was so rough and it was high tide the blowholes were spectacular as the sea rushed in hitting the walls and shooting up into the air.  The noise was tremendous and you could feel the power of the water shaking the ground we were standing on.
