Town Hall
We had a lovely evening with our friends last night.
Today while David went out campaigning Carole took a day off and we went to Felixstowe to have a walk to Felixstowe ferry and back.
I was dreading this evening as I was pressured into accompanying them to the Mayor’s charity Burns Supper. They neglected to tell me it was black tie. I was seated opposite a friend of theirs who was head at a prestigious school. He was arrogant and talked about himself without once asking anything about me. He made a point of telling me he’d been at Cambridge and all about his career progression and all the boards he was now on.
The Burns Supper was hilarious. They had 2 pipers, all very formal. Luckily the haggis was addressed by a Scotsman who did it well. The immortal memory focussed solely on his reputation with women. The chap toasting the lassies made pathetic jokes about women - it was all cringe making. He joked about famous Scottish women - the only ones he could come up with were Mary Queen of Scots, Lulu and Nicola Sturgeon, remarking the tent in her garden was because the police were looking for Jimmy Crankie. They also had a toast to the present king. I was the only person who didn’t stand up and do it. Sandy, who was their Labour MP till Ipswich thought Boris Johnstone was a good idea, sang “A man’s a man for a’ that” unaccompanied. He sang beautifully and it was the only bit of socialism all evening. We had a lovely chat at the end and lamented about the state of the nation.
I hadn’t wanted to go but it was unforgettable!
