Watching the watchers

Yesterday a hump-backed whale entered the harbour and spent several hours entertaining enthralled onlookers as it breached and surfaced.  (I missed the excitement having walked the dog in the opposite direction.) Today it was spotted again in the late afternoon and we raced down to the breakwater and joined a throng of excited local folk. But we had only vague sightings - distant splashes, plus a seal that swam up to gawp at the throng. The wind was biting and the rain whipped our faces with icy volleys. We retreated as the light faded although people were still arriving. 

Several kinds of whales are occasional visitors to our coast but this is the first time a humpback has entered the harbour. It may return, attracted by the herring shoals currently in the bay.
