Problem corner

It's a bit of a puzzler; what to do this corner of the playground by the busy street. We'd like to reduce the noise and pollution for the kids but it's too shady and dry under the Holly trees to grow much. Made worse by lots of tree roots, tarmac and trampling by the kids. Think we might put a couple of compost bins here, but I see that someone likes to draw with chalks on the fencing so maybe not?

Damp and breezy cold weather today. Gardening in the playground was thankfully cancelled as my bones were chilled in a few seconds outside.
