Memories

One of the broken gravestones in the Coulter Lane Burial Ground.

The cemetery was laid out in 1867 with a small chapel to serve the Burntwood Asylum (later St Matthews Hospital.)  It was in use as late as the 1950s.

A total of 3013 bodies were buried here - 1560 men and 1543 women. Only a few scattered gravestones survive, some inscribed with the dates of burials and the inmate’s initials.

In the graveyard are also nine graves of local servicemen who fought and died in the First World War. These are cared for by the War Graves Commission
