A Couple of Film References

I love this place. It's just sophisticated enough to appeal to a man of my developed tastes without being 'quaint' or 'arty'. (In contrast, Blowing Rock is self-consciously quaint and Asheville ditto arty, as I was to discover).

A couple of miles to the north is Montreat (a self-conscious acronym for Mountain Retreat). It is an idyllic Christian community (ie idyllic if you are Christian) and home to the evangelist Billy Graham (whom I had assumed was dead long since). It is beautifully situated along a creek, shaded by trees. There was some kind of youth gathering going on there, with much whoopin and hollerin, and a packed Christian Gift Shop, but by this time I was having a Wicker Man moment and breaking out in a cold sweat, so we headed for a hike in the hills, but then I had a Deliverance moment, so we headed back to town for ice-creams.
