Wick to Ullapool
We'd decided to break up our journey home with a trip to Ullapool as it's somewhere we've always fancied going.
The logical route would have taken us down the A9 to just south of Golspie, after which we'd have headed west. Instead, we headed north-west from Wick up to Thurso and then followed the coast all the way across to Loch Eriboll, as featured in today's Blip.
Where we stopped to take the photo, there was a handy information board concerned with the geology of the place. It mentioned that 540 million years ago, Scotland was on the edge of an ancient continent, just south of the equator. It slowly drifted north, colliding with England and Wales 430 million years ago. Fascinating stuff: I'd love to know how that was all worked out!
From there, we carried on around the coast, eventually working our way down to Ullapool and, more specifically, The Arch Inn, where we're staying tonight.
We had a couple of drinks in the bar, and then headed up to our room, which was a little small, but that was fine; we only need it to sleep in!.
The Inn isn't currently doing food - chef issues, Brexit, etc - so in the evening we wandered out and came upon the Caledonian Hotel, which was a little too brightly lit for my tastes but otherwise perfect!
