Gordale Scar

WilsdenWalker sent out the invitation to the Hobblers to walk the Malham circuit today and Angela and I joined her.  It was a dreich old day but thankfully it didn't really rain.  The path to Janet's Foss waterfall was under water in several places and I was glad I had worn my proper boots.  There was plenty of water coming over the waterfall and the beck was the fullest I have seen it.

From Janet's Foss we crossed the road and walked up the track in to Gordale Scar, which looks forbidding on the sunniest of days.  Today it wouldn't have looked out of place in a Tolkien Last Battle movie.  Usually the 'bathtub' at the top of the fall is either dry or has a trickle of water coming over it and in the past we have climbed up the fall here to take the track up to the Tarn, not today!  The blip does not capture the sound of the water which was echoing around the natural bowl of the Scar, quite something.

Having got quite damp from the spray and water dripping off the surrounding cliffs, we retraced our steps to the road and took the path uphill towards Malham Cove, which did not become visible until we were quite close due to the mist and drizzle.  The clints and grykes of the Cove were treacherous so we took a route through them on the grass and descended by the many stone steps to the valley where we paused for peanut butter sandwiches, thank you Angela!

On the road back in to the village, S suggested we go in to Beck Hall for lunch and that was the best decision.  They turned vegan at the beginning of December and the menu was varied.  S ordered a sandwich which was huge when it arrived, whilst A and I had the Caribbean Spiced Carrot Soup which was also totally yummy.  We shall return.

Thank you to WilsdenWalker for the driving and to both S and A for the excellent Hobbler company once again.

Better on black.

This is what it looks like on a drier day!
