Great Ruaha

As the road passes from eastern Tanzania into the Southern Highlands it climbs some very dramatic escarpments. The Great Ruaha River, one of Tanzania’s major water courses, is a key feature of the journey.

We passed through Njombe, the coldest town in Tanzania at an altitude of around two thousand metres. It famously snowed in Njombe last winter and everyone was aghast.

We eventually reached our destination of Songea after two full days of driving and a pineapple and ginger juice perked me up. The driver remained surprisingly perky given the distance.
