Betrayed

Went for a walk from the village of Hoxne today, following a route designed as a heritage trail. It started from the village hall, close to the Goldbrook Bridge where King Edmund was hiding when he was apparently betrayed to the marauding Danes who put him to death. We passed various other sites of interest - the field where the "Hoxne Hoard" (treasure dating back to Roman times, now in the British Museum) was found, a brick kiln, interesting houses, a couple of churches, another memorial to Edmund, and so on.

What's this got to do with Christmas? Edmund was apparently crowned King of East Anglia on Christmas Day in 855 &, as a Saint, has long been associated with a Christmas fair in Bury St Edmunds. If you'd prefer to see a more Christmassy picture, the extra shows part of the display in the Church of St Peter & St Paul, in Hoxne itself.
