Urban walk
Today Julie led the Haltwhistle Walkers on an urban walk in Newcastle. I am spoilt for choice, but had to choose one image, so here is a lovely young woman who I met in Jesmond Dene. She really had her hands full so to speak, but the dogs were very quiet and well behaved.
We walked from Paddy Freeman's park, through Jesmond Dene, via the Biscuit Factory (for a bit of culture) on to Ouseburn. Here we visited the Victoria tunnel. This 2.5 mile tunnel was built between 1838 and 1842 to transport coal from the Leazes colliery to the river instead of taking the coal by horse and cart through the city centre. It is a testament to Victorian engineering.
When the mining ended, the tunnel was closed, but was reopened as an air raid shelter during WWII. It must have been very claustrophobic for the thousands of people down there.
After 2 hours we were ready to enjoy the sunshine again. We had a meal in town before the train journey home. An excellent day out.
PS I chose this picture especially for hobbs who likes dogs.
