ULVERSTON'S CHRISTMAS TREE

A trip to Ulverston with G this morning, later than planned as I had a bad night, sleepwise - just one of those nights.

I've always like this building in Pharmacy and tried to learn more about it.  It's not a great photo but was the best I could get today as it was fairly busy and just behind where I was stood taking the photo is a busy road.  

Once the tree has gone I will try and get a better view of the building and the two streets.

Anyway we had a pleasant trip.  Started off in Gillam's for coffee of course.  Then popped into the market.  Sad to see quite a few stalls not open and some just empty.  Ulverston Library has set up temporary stalls there due to problems with the current library building.

Then a wander round the town.  It's a nice place for a wander and is always fairly busy and still has many independent shops.

After that we went to Manjushri at Conishead Priory and lunch so G could have a browse in the shop, before heading home.

History Ulverston - for those interested.

Ulverston was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ulvrestun, deriving from an Old Norse family name Úlfarr meaning 'wolf warrior' and tun meaning 'farm' or 'homestead'. This gives rise to the presence of a wolf on the town's coat of arms.

Cohen's Pharmacy as it now is, only since 2018, it was another name before that and has had quite a few names I believe.  It was possibly built mid 19th Century midto late C18 and C17 remains.  It occupies a prominent corner site, with a 2-bay gable facing King Street. It is inscribed 'PATENT MEDICINES TEA OIL DRUG WAREHOUSE'.
