My Son
An early start to My Son ( Beautiful Mountain ). We were there by 9 and so beat the hordes at first.
An amazing UNESCO world heritage site , a site once of over 70 Hindu temples built by the Cham people, My Son was the religious and political coaches Champa kingdom betwen the 4c and 13c. It was then lost until the late 1890s when rediscovered by the French - and sadly some items ransacked before being bombed by the US in the Vietnam war. Our guide explained how the temples were built of clay bricks which were then burned before resin was applied, sandstone and some volcanic rock. However hard they tried the conservation teams have been unable to replicate this and the brighter new clay bricks soon turn mossy in the humid atmosphere yet the 1000 year old stones do not.
For me this was the highlight of the trip so far, wandering round the 20 or so ruins, mostly without too many crowds.
The jungle encroaches on all sides. The weather was: rain / heavy rain/ torrential rain & sun!
