The Old Town Hall

So very cold today, the first day of December. Slightly warmer in Carlisle as the sun was shining. I was at the hairdresser’s and then met Gordon in Waterstones where we had coffee and then chose and bought Christmas books for the family.

I realised that the next building in the 50 Carlisle buildings- the Old Town Hall - was just round the corner but then found it was the first day of the Christmas Market and the area in front of the Town Hall was full of stalls and funfair etc. Anyway I took the photo, although I could not go any further back and it was so sunny i could not see what i was doing.

The Old Town Hall was built in 1669, replacing a 14th century Moot Hall. It has undergone many alterations over the years but is still the same 17th Century building. The ground floor has always been in commercial and retail use while the grander rooms upstairs have been various civic function rooms, e.g. the City Magistrates Court, the Council Chamber, Offices of Carlisle Corporation. All of these moved on and the top floor is now the Tourist Information Centre.
