Etowah Indian Mounds
Saturday 25 November
Today’s excursion took us northwest of Atlanta, to Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic site near Cartersville Georgia. Home to several thousand Native Americans from around 1000 A.D. to 1550 A.D., this site protects earthen mounds, a plaza, village site, borrow pits and a defensive ditch, and is the most intact Mississippian Culture site in the southeast. They developed a high level of artistry and craftsmanship, built a ceremonial complex, of ritual and burial mounds, hunted farmed, fished and controlled trade along the adjacent Etowah River.
Once we’d finished there, we drove into Atlanta for a very good lunch at a favourite Mediterranean place of Jen and Jason, then we went for a brisk walk along the Chattahoochee River, until the light began to fade.
From there, we visited the Winter Lantern Festival at Gwinnett County fairground - see collage in extras - then it was back “home” for a late dinner.
A wonderful day!
