Fragments from the past
This afternoon I visited St Mary's church in Ewelme which last featured in a blip in January. This time I went to look at the stained glass. The large east window contains a magnificent late Victorian Crucifixion scene by Clayton & Bell - a blip for another day. St John's side chapel also has an east window. This contains jumbled fragments of medieval glass (said to be 14th and15th century) that were collected from the other windows and brought together here - sometimes in quite bizarre combinations - in the early 19th century. There are saints (or bits of saints), animals (deer, lion, sheep) and the mythical yale and unicorn, as well as various flower and leaf designs and the heraldic shields above. An interesting, but highly corroded, window and some lovely late autumn sunlight.
