THE REMNANT FOLLOWING COMMUNION

This was the Communion Table
when the service was over -
          and I pondered on
what this strange word means -
“A part or quantity that is left
     after the greater part
          has been used.”

Today, we remembered the death
of Jesus by eating the bread
          and drinking the wine -
but what will happen to this remnant?
Will it be disposed of
     and the remaining wine
          poured away?
Another pause for thought -
how many people in the world -
          particularly in Gaza
would love to eat and drink
                    this remnant?
And in the meantime
     the war goes on...
while we continue
to throw away what is left over.

Lord, help us to remember with love
those who have no bread and wine,
in fact, those who have nothing,
and who would be only too grateful
     to eat this remnant.
