Castanets
Another day, another wood. A small sweet chestnut tree had cast its castagne, maybe with the help of squirrels, and I was able to collect precisely three nuts. The two on the left of the image had already been eaten, the empty shells neatly discarded. Valuable high calorie snacks for the cold season.
It made me think of professional forager Mo Wilde who lived for a whole year on what she was able to source from nature (and ended up extremely healthy). She did, I believe, make use of items she had preserved or frozen which gave her some advantage over creatures that have to rely on what they find from day to day, or hoard in nooks and crevices like squirrels.
She has an extremely informative website.
