Mass Migration

The first flock of cranes crossed over our house in the late morning, the last ones during the afternoon. I lost count somewhere around 20 flocks, with dozens, sometimes hundreds of birds in one formation. There were more flocks just south and north of us, all heading southwest towards France and Spain. Sometimes we could hear their bugle calls, but they were too far away to see them. All in all, there must have been thousands of cranes, probably tens of thousands. I just stood in the garden, watching in awe.

None of the many photos I took were really good, as it was a dull day with little light, and most formations were flying quite high. So I decided to give you a collage of impressions from our very special Crane Sunday.
