A Gourd Day Out
A drive today into the South Hams of Devon and lunch out with friends at the Ocean’s Restaurant, high on Bolberry Down. In the kitchen of the house where our friends live there was a basket of gourds. I can’t resist a gourd photo. Looking around for a suitable background I thought their oak sideboard might fit the bill. It’s a lovely piece of furniture with carved figures. Apparently it was made locally in the New Forest for a wedding present. Our friend’s grandmother was in service to a wealthy widow who gave it to her as a gift when her husband died. The full story contains much more interesting detail.
After lunch we drove past Bolt Head Aerodrome (still in occasional use with a grass landing strip for light aircraft), the Winking Prawn at North Sands (a heavy shower and people packed inside like sardines) and Salcombe (some obscenely large and expensive properties). A gourd day out!
