Woodland Detail

One of my favourite local walks starts from Shaugh Bridge, about 6 miles north of Plymouth. In the course of a circular 4 mile walk there are two rivers, steep-sided wooded valleys, open moorland and two tors. There are also bronze age antiquities, a medieval stone cross and plenty of industrial archeology. The wide range of habitats provides a haven for wildlife throughout the seasons. Todays highlight was flushing a snipe and watching it fly away with it's distinctive zig-zag flight. Both rivers were swollen by the recent heavy rains and were a spectacular sight as they cascaded and tumbled over the moss-covered, granite boulders, and down through the steep, narrow valleys. Although I took a few photos of the rivers, my favourite shot today was this old tree trunk. As time goes on, I seem to enjoy the beauty in the detail of the landscape more.
