Blue Skies and Red Flags
This view of our mound garden, the hill behind its formidable retaining wall and a glimpse of the arbor and veggie boxes (looking a bit like covered wagons as John has the cover cloth on them) has been shown many times before here. Look for the six metal birds and a metal cactus visible in this picture. Most of our garden furniture is also metal. Fire prevention is always on our minds, although I am grateful that the last couple of years have been wetter than usual and we've had no big wildfires.
But we can never let our guard down. As many followers have commented, the vegetation here is very dry at the end of a dry summer, and humidity is in single digits. The third element in the fire prediction equation is high winds. It is supposed to be windy tonight and a red flag (fire watch) warning has been issued, but so far there isn't a leaf stirring and all looks calm.
I zipped into town for a Pilates class where we worked our arms and legs in multiple ingenious ways and wondered what is happening next week as none of us regulars could get into class. I'm second on the waiting list so that doesn't bode too well for my chances. I'd like to say I'll just exercise at home, but I know I won't....
