Heavy Metal

Hospital day, so after some time with J I travelled to RSPB Burton Wetlands, which sits alongside the Dee estuary. Highlights for me included a kingfisher and a nine strong flock of cattle egrets, as well as geese, ducks and waders,

This view is looking out from the Wetlands (those waders are mainly black tailed godwits) towards the big steelworks on the other side of the estuary. Steel production here commenced in 1896. It used to be John Summers and Sons, then as Shotton Steel works became part of nationalised British Steel, then privatised British Steel plc, then Corus after amalgamation with another company, and most recently (like much of British industry) finds itself in foreign control as part of the Indian giant Tata Steel.

I always find the juxtaposition of industry and supposedly “wild” places interesting.

Thanks to Bob’s Blips for hosting the challenge.
