On The Border
A trip out to Carlisle this afternoon, as we’ve got a concert at the Old Fire Station tonight. We set off early with a view to calling at Tebay Services, getting a few goodies from the farm shop and possibly having coffee and cake whilst there. Unfortunately, not only did I totally cock up getting there (took the wrong road out of Kendal because I was on autopilot) but the place was totally rammed when we did eventually get there. We got the things we wanted from the shop, but didn’t want to join the scrum in the cafe, so pressed on to Carlisle. Mrs C was looking for a smart coat, but couldn’t find anything in either House of Fraser or M&S. I wasn’t looking for anything, but found a very nice smart jacket on the “final reductions” rail in M&S!
The actual border with Scotland is quite a bit further north, but I’ve always liked these street signs. As they’re level with the old town hall, I can only imagine the thought processes of the city fathers back in the day - “Where does that road go?” “England” “okay, we’ll call it English Street. “What about if you go the other way?” “Scotland” “Scotch Street it is then. Sorted” Further evidence for this thought process is that the street where Barclays and Nat West can be found, is called “Bank Street!”
We’re now enjoying a mixed grill. No need to rush, as doors aren’t for another hour. It’s a bluesy night tonight as we’re seeing Sari Schorr (who we’ve seen before) and Matt Pearce (who we haven’t!). Really looking forward to the concert and finding out what the venue is like - I’ve heard many good reports, but this is our first time there.
And when we get home later, we’ve got a couple of cakes from the Tebay farm shop to look forward to for supper. Yum!
UPDATE: Just arrived at the venue only to find the concert was cancelled six months ago!! Never been notified of this, but I will be chasing a refund as soon as we get home.
