Sunday Stroll
It’s a visit to Meols today where we have a delicious brunch with Daniel and Solveig, followed indulgently by ice cream. No visit to the Wirral is complete without calling into Churn and Chill. Today’s flavours - for me at least - are brown butter and tahini cookie with fig leaf and blackberry. Absolutely delicious. This is a tiny place run by mother and daughter - proudly boasting a three star Taste award for their chocolate and sea salt flavour. I ask how they get the fig leaf flavour. It’s an overnight cold infusion of the leaves in milk, apparently - and the leaves are brought to them by customers. I just love the whole ethos of this tiny place.
Our visit today is fleeting, but I do have time for a few quick shots across the sands from Hoylake. The tide is coming in; not yet high enough to move the distant bands of birds to flight - though a few have taken to the air. And apart from birds, the silty beach is populated by human figures on a Sunday stroll, usually accompanied by canine companions. I’m less than happy with my bird shots, so it’s one of these that ends up as my main today.
And then it’s back home to another fest of rugby. Typically, England manage to produce their best display for ages - and amazingly succeed in being the only northern hemisphere team left. The battle between South Africa and France us gladiatorial and incredibly fast paced - worthy of a final. Gutted for France - but what a game.
