Dear Green Place 11 - Maxwell Park

This is one of the smaller Glasgow parks, which I think is lovely but maybe not so well-known. The land was gifted by Sir John Maxwell to the Burgh of Pollokshields for the construction of a burgh hall and public gardens. (I see the name Maxwell is often mentioned in connection with the sale/donation of land for Glasgow City Parks...)

I like the way this park is laid out, so that you walk in and see a glimpse of the fountain remains and flower beds, then walk a bit further in and discover the beautiful flower borders and then you walk further in and suddenly there's a pond tucked away at the back with a bright bloom of yellow irises all around the edge. (Although this does all depend on which entrance you use...)

Although the pond is small, it's great for its variety of water birds. A pair of little grebes has been nesting there for years and I saw only one of them today so maybe there's another sitting on a nest somewhere...? There were also at least two pairs of tufted ducks but only mallard ducklings and cootlings in the pond so far.

There is a link to yesterday's park as the fountain that once stood here was also a Doulton fountain, but made of Italian white marble.
