Lochrin Basin

The Edinburgh terminus of the Union Canal at Fountainbridge. The canal ended here at the west end in Edinburgh and the dock used to unload cheap coal for the city along with stone and slate for the building of the New Town. Lime was also transported into the city to help improve the agricultural fields around the city. Trade leaving Edinburgh was limited to a small quantity of merchants goods and manure.

Its easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of the busy dock as the boats arrived and were unloaded. Today it is more peaceful with a few bars and restaurants with tables and chairs which spill out on to the cobbles on sunny days, and with people using the canal path to travel to and from work.
