I’m Alive

It is quite impressive that not only are founder members Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott still alive, but that they are also capable of playing a two hour show at the ages of 81 and 77 respectively. Not that the other band members could be described as spring chickens - I reckon the combined ages of those on stage is around 450 years!
Like the Rolling Stones, the Hollies have been a band continuously for sixty plus years. Also like the Stones, there are two original members still performing. But there the similarity ends. Whilst the Stones sell out arenas around the world, the Hollies were playing Venue Cymru in Llandudno last night. Though, as Tony Hicks pointed out, this was not their first visit, having originally performed in Llandudno back in 1962.
But it was a great night. I think we were actually some of the youngest audience members - and definitely younger than the band! The first record Mrs C ever bought was “Can’t Tell The Bottom From The Top,” so she was delighted when they played that early on. The rest of the set was - as you might have guessed - a romp through all their many hits, though some were arranged differently to the original recording, which was interesting to hear.
Our decision to stay over in a cheap hotel (Travelodge in Colwyn Bay) proved to be a wise one as we were quite tired after the show. An early start this morning, saw us home in time for lunch, even after a detour to Cheshire Oaks for a bit of retail therapy. I was also able to get the lawns cut this afternoon, as it was probably as dry as it’s going to get this week.
I’m out again tonight, down in Lancaster for the Footlights AGM. It’s not going to be as much fun as the last three nights, as is evident from the fact that I’m writing this whilst someone is pedantically arguing about a couple of typos in last years minutes. It could be a long night…
