Round Britain Run Day 2
As we drove up into Scotland, the rain was intense. Large patches of standing water lurking in the dark meant you had to keep watching out that you didn’t damage the cars by running into them. Finally we were approaching John O’Groats at around 8am, without the benefit of the usual beautiful sunrise - just a slightly lighter gloom.
A great cooked breakfast in JO’G, then off we went again. A wet but beautiful drive through the highlands, with constant careful eye on the weather, route and road closures. With Amber warnings for rain and flooding and landslides, we were being careful. At one point we lost reverse gear in the Stag (the wet, we think - it thankfully returned a few hours later), and a puddle run through made a car clanging noise we’ll have to investigate further.
We made it the whole route to Crianlarch, where we had to divert past Loch Lomond because of flooding on the route. We drive as a collective with friends (3 cars this time) and we passed one of these cars in a bus stop lay-by in Dumbarton. They signalled us back, and we found they had a sheered wheel stud. Not a time consuming fix, but one that needed the right tools and expertise. Reluctantly we left them there, to retire from the run and order Dominoes pizza to the bus stop while waiting for recovery. The blip is Gary, one of our continuing team, grabbing a quick “dinner” nearby.
After a slightly longer rest stop in Tebay to rest and regroup, wash, and enjoy the prospect of the rain finally ending, we headed down and into Wales for the fun of the wiggling roads.
