ZEPHYRANTHES candida: White Fairy Lily

This delicate little perennial herb, that was planted by my gardener,
is full of surprises.  When first planted, it looked like chives, & just
disappeared within this ground cover.  After a long, hot Summer,
it is blooming during a hot spell in October, for the first time.  None of
this makes sense until my research cleared things up.

Sometimes called RAIN LILY because it blooms after a rain, at the end of the Summer, into Autumn..  The other day, just before the hot spell started,
I watered all my plants.  That overhead watering must have seemed like
rain.

This member of the Amaryllis family, is native to South America, but has been naturalized in Africa, Asia, Europe & North America.  The flowers can be white, pink, orange or yellow.  It is low maintenance & is great in groupings, swathes, along garden paths or in rock gardens.  It can even be used as a ground cover.

These pristine, white flowers might get lost in a colorful garden bed; but
surrounded by this ground cover, it is the star in this area, under my front porch.
