Still Life
Today's the day ....................... to be in charge
We had a taste this morning of what it would be like to have your own Art Gallery - because it was our turn to look after the new exhibition in The Harbour Cottage Gallery in Kirkcudbright.
In the 1950s, a group of local artists and businessmen, headed by the well-known artist Charles Oppenheimer, saved an 18th century building from demolition to create a versatile exhibition space for the benefit of the town. Although it was never the intention, over the years, the gallery has acquired a fair number of paintings and other artefacts that have been gifted to it - and that's what forms the current exhibition.
Quite a few of the artworks on show are by local artists and of people and places in the area. The large oil on the right is by Leslie (Dan) Stuart Duncan, who lived on the High Street and is entitled 'The nude on the beach'. The other two are by Isabella Hamilton Findlay, who is better known round here for her stained glass windows in the local churches.
We had a great time and met some very interesting (and lovely) people. And had a whole gallery of paintings to call our own ...................!
