A day in Riga...

Flying Baltic Air gave us the opportunity for a transit stop in Riga, Latvia and we made the most of it. We had a guided tour round the city, partly by coach and partly on foot, so plenty of opportunity for taking photographs. Riga's New Town was constructed in the late 19th /early 20th century and has the most stunning display of beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. In fact, Riga's collection of Art Nouveau buildings has been recognised by UNESCO as unparalleled anywhere in the world. The Old Town by contrast has wonderful old Medieval houses and Churches, and narrow cobbled streets opening onto lovely squares. The city also has a quirky feel, with unusual features and murals. Many of the women walking around were beautifully dressed, and looked very chic and elegant. We had a meal in a lovely restaurant, and enjoyed some traditional Latvian dishes. It was difficult to choose what photo to Blip, but eventually chose this one of the pavement cafes and mural in Dome Square because it shows both a taste of the city's architecture and the quirkiness of the culture... I would recommend Riga for a city break.
