Cork Oaks …
… in the Extremadura region of western Spain. The cork in their bark has been harvested, leaving them with this red appearance.
We passed this grove of trees on our birding excursion to a nearby mountain area at nearly 1600 meters (5000 feet). We were seeking relief from the heat—it was 35 C (nearly 100 F) on the plain in Extremadura today!
