On the top of Overside

This gives an indication of how strong the wind was today. Overside was our third Wainwright of the day, the other two being Barrow and Causey Pike. We almost didn’t attempt Causey Pike as at 2090 feet it was much higher than our first top, Barrow (1490) and it was ferocious enough on there.

We talked to people descending from Causey, especially a couple who were considerably older than us, who said only a few areas were exposed. I’m glad we decided to do the Pike as it was a challenge we rose to. Just a few metres off the summit and in the lee of the ridge it was calm enough to sit, eat lunch and admire the views as shown in the second extra

We added 12 Wainwright’s to the list this week, making it 103 for me and 85 for Susan. I’m going for the record of the longest elapsed time for completing the 214 Wainwrights. My first was in April 1975, so that over 48 years and counting.

Quite a few people went on from the Pike along the ridge to Scar Crags, Sail and beyond. Not for us today as the ridge, straightforward enough in good weather was not where we wanted to be.!

Only a spat or two of rain, not much sunshine. Excellent visibility and tremendous views in all directions during the ascent and descent. The first extra is a view from Causey Pike. The third extra is early on in the walk as we passed people stopped “to admire the view”

There was some steep sections on the descent from Overside back to Braithwaite. Once over those it was a lovely gentle gradient back to the Coledale Inn for a well earned pint of Keswick Brewery’s Thirst Quencher.

Every time we come here by the end of the week we have found our fell legs. This last day felt the easiest!
