This is just outside the dome of Dynamic Earth, a science centre and planetarium telling the story of planet Earth, from its beginning to present day. It was opened in 1999 as part of the urban rejuvenation of an old industrial area including breweries and a gas works. When the centre was built on the site of the Abbey Brewery, it incorporated part of the southerly wall and a turret. Apparently when Queen Victoria visited Holyrood Palace she disliked seeing the brewery from her windows and requested that the wall had castellated turrets and ornate gun loops to resemble a castle and she even paid for brewery staff to be dressed as guards and patrol the 'battlements' to help the illusion. The view beyond is Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park.
