Union Terrace Gardens

Today's the day.  . . . . . . . . . . to catch up 

A day of exploring in and around Aberdeen - and seeing what had changed beyond all recognition, as well as comfortingly remembering lots that were just the same.  Into that last category would have to come Aberdeen Music Hall, the venue of our first date(!) and the wonderful Aberdeen Art Gallery, full of fascinating works of art and as a place, looking even more vibrant than ever.  

The part of the city that had changed the most were the Union Terrace Gardens, just opposite the Art Gallery.  Apparently at a cost of around £30M, they have been transformed into what you see above.  An amphitheatre of colourful planting, interspersed with places to sit and winding paths to wander along.  It has all caused a certain amount of controversy not least because of the cost but we loved it - and thought it was a real public asset.  The iconic statue of William Wallace (see extra) has also been incorporated and deservedly given a much more prominent spot than he had before.

We finished off the day with a performance of the Rocky Horror Show at His Majesty's Theatre.  Very appropriately, the first performance was in June 1973 - and so it's celebrating fifty years, just like us . . . . . . !
