As Far From England As Can Be

You're looking at Sarah Walker's cabin. Her husband predeceased her, as did her children. So as a middle-aged woman, she left England in 1914 to come here, to homestead. You're looking at what remains of her cabin, her stove, and her bedsprings.

Homestead Meadows is a lovely place. The meadow is full of wild irises! As you walk about here you marvel at her way of life. Her nearest neighbor is, oh, half a mile away.

According to documents, she made a living selling eggs down at the road....a mere 2.8 miles away, down 1,300 feet in elevation. The hike isn't a killer, but it isn't trivial either. An up-and-back trip requires 20 stream crossings. I made it just fine, but how oh how did Sarah get those eggs down the mountain without breaking them?

She must've been one spunky lady.
