Invasion from Mars?

I popped over to Woking today to a craft store to pick up a few items for a watercolour course I'm starting next week (very excited!). On the way back I dropped into Horsell Common for a walk.

The Sandpit on the common is renown for being the landing spot for the first cylinder from which a Martian appeared:

“… An enormous hole had been made by the impact of the projectile, and the sand and gravel had been flung violently in every direction over the heath, forming heaps visible a mile and a half away."
(from H.G. Wells’s 1897 novel The War of the Worlds)

Today this quiet spot, popular with dog walkers, was showing signs that autumn was on its way with earthballs popping up all over the place.  I spent a happy couple of hours crawling around the woodland floor taking multiple shots for later focus stacking in Photoshop to create an image for JDO's Tiny Tuesday challenge.
