Storm clouds
Storm clouds gathering beyond St Michael's Kirk, Note the stone steps projecting from the dyke and leading up to a little iron gate atop dyke to give visitors access when the main gate was locked.
The extra shows the steps from inside the kirkyard. In the 16th century it was decreed that all kirkyards should be protected by stone and walls 2 ells( just under 3 metres ) high and should have gates and stiles for worshippers. This was to solve the problem of livestock straying into the kirkyard and grubbing about disturbing the graves.
