A puffin!

We woke up to bright sun and had another lovely day on the island. This puffin has been freshly painted since we were here last year. Puffins nest on a nearby uninhabited island, Burhou, and they have a webcam to observe them set up by the Alderney Wildlife Trust. Lots of the souvenirs in the shops have puffins on them….I have not succumbed yet on this trip!

There are five main sandy beaches here suitable for swimming, sunbathing etc. the extra shows the third one we have visited, Longi, and Raz island in the distance. The island has a causeway which is only exposed at low tide. When we first came to the Alderney you could go over to Raz and there was a small cafe. Now it has gates and is a private residence! The building on Raz was originally a Victorian Fort, one of many fortifications on Alderney.

Despite being prime holiday season it is still not at all crowded here. I think the air fare is fairly prohibitive for most and there are not that many family houses for holiday lets. Much cheaper to do an all inclusive in France,Spain etc.
