Oft-Visited. Leitz Summaron 35mm
I was back in the cemetery this morning, a heavily overcast, cool day. The gray makes the colors really pop. I have several images to choose from. In a world of tombstones, where every one has a story to tell, this one stuck out because of the pebbles and - unusually - shells left behind by visitors. This is an ancient Jewish tradition, but practiced by other religions. The Talmud - the code of Jewish religious law -, states that the soul stays in the place where the body was buried, and the stones help to keep that soul from straying. The version I like better says that the stones are placed there to warn priests away, since if one were to come within four feet of the body, it could be rendered impure...
But Mt Auburn is not just about the dead; it is an utterly beautiful park, and life is everywhere. A passer-by told me that the lovely blossoms in the Extra are in the Hibiscus family. That makes sense. Note how the caterpillars or moths have demolished the leaves, but left the flowers entirely intact.
