Walking across the Tyne . . .

. . . to the Baltic . . . in the rain.

We had a few things in mind for this couple of days in the North East but continuous rain changed our plans somewhat. However, our main aim was to get to see the Chris Killip Retrospective at the Baltic. Our daughter saw the exhibition in London a while back and we have been waiting for it to get here.

(Extra 1) In the main these are photographs taken in the North of England and particularly the North East in the 1970s and 80s. “Chris Killip’s photographs bear witness to an era of deindustrialisation and the challenges to communities affected by those changes.” Thoughtful, and thought-provoking, photographs of people and places during this time. Quite mesmerising in their humanity, tenderness and respect. People in difficult circumstances given dignity. A breathtaking exhibition. It was good to see it well-attended, especially by local people identifying with places and memories - lots of discussions taking place.

(Extra 2) We are now in the Malmaison across the Tyne. A bit posh for us who are used to Premier Inns, but it’s only one night. Hoping for better weather tomorrow as we head for the sea.
