Sweet Joe Pye Weed
It is Flower Friday and my selection, and I have lots to choose from, is the Joe Pye weed, the pretty flower with the unfortunate name. It has the most delicate flower clusters and a lovely pink color. It can grow to 8 feet, mine is about 4 feet tall. the plant was likely named for Joseph Shauquethqueat, a highly-respected Mohican sachem also known to white neighbors as Joe Pye, who lived in the Mohican community in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in the late 1700's to early 1800's. Joe Pye weed has a long history of medicinal use, including as a diuretic, for easing urinary tract issues, joint stiffness, and gout. It is also used to treat reproductive issues and diabetes. "Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them." - A. A. Milne Gift#201: flowers, so many flowers.
