The old churn stands have recently had a revamp and are looking very fresh and colourful. They were introduced in the 1930s by the co-op creameries, Farmers left their full milk churns on a special stand where they were picked up by a cart or lorry and taken to the creamery. Every farm would have its own number. Most in West Cork are made out of stone blocks, rendered, then painted. The little door was where you could also leave messages. They are everywhere if you look, not so many in as good condition as these two. There's even a call out to record them for National Heritage Week. It seems a bit of a shame to tag them for Derelict Sunday but they are no longer used for their original purpose so I'll give it ago.

In other news. The day was much more pleasant than forecast Instead of torrential rain we had warm sunshine and a gentle breeze. Lovely.

Himself went to Cork to collect the books. He took a young lad with him for the heavy hoiking. First they collected a van from Cork airport then they went off to East Cork, negotiated the newly improved and massive Dunkettle roundabout - take your eyes off the road for a moment and you;'e in Dublin!.Or Limerick.  Or Waterford. - which has just opened then returned home. We now have a large stack of boxes!
