Sailing Celebration and a Midnight Meander
Decided pretty last minute to join our friend Vítor for the end of term celebrations of the sailing club he's recently joined in Montargil, especially as it was also his birthday. He was thrilled to go out on the club's Laser with Mike, who is so experienced at sailing them. His daughter, Débora, and I spent the time on our kayak, and I learned how hard it is to steer in strong winds!
We ended up leaving later than we'd planned, as Bia (V's wife) didn't arrive till late, but eventually set off. Should have got home around midnight, but came to a police roadblock at the turnoff to Monsaraz - we'd heard there was to be a nocturnal triathlon, but never dreamed we'd not be able to enter Mourão. Long story short, had to go up to the next bridge over the river that feeds our Lake, cross over and come down through Spain - a three hour diversion, mostly on roads dangerous with wild boar at night. I don't know how Mike managed to keep his eyes open. (Couldn't believe there hadn't been any notices about it except on FB, apparently, which neither of us have.)
Then, arriving in Mourão, kept being blocked by police, until we found an unmanned barrier on the back road to our place. I got out, shifted the barrier, and we drove through, pretty confident that we could avoid hitting some random triathlonner who might still be running at 3am.
Needless to say, didn't Blip when we got in; I´ll be Blipping today's as well in a bit.
Gratefuls:
- joining in Vítor's celebrations; I made G&Ts out of the back of our car for whoever wanted them
- making it home to our own bed eventually
- not meeting any boars, though we did see other wildlife, including a badger
